When we lose someone we love, it’s heartbreaking. Sometimes we lose the idea of who we thought they were, just to realize they were never truly there for us. Sometimes the diamonds are just cheap rocks.

You Were Never a Diamond

you were never a diamond
more of a scuffed-up rock
I saw you as a treasure
that I wanted to cling to
I couldn’t hug your prickly arms
I didn’t want to admit to myself
that you were bad medicine
but I felt my tongue burning
every time my heart turned toward you
my eyes dropped to my internal stomach
as I realized the truth of who you are
I filed away my feelings
and preserved them for someone who deserves it
